this came up once before. I said No, it’s ridiculous! it’s not a phone, it doesn’t answer, it just gets the caller id.

a phone installer said, every device must have a filter. I think he knows nothing about Directv’s use of the phone.

but filters are cheap, and free from most dsl providers.

I never used a filter on non-phone devices when I had DSL, but if you have a problem , try it.

I have 5 DirecTV Tivo units on my DirecTV account. When I used to have to have them connected I had to have the DSL filter connected. My units would either not get the Guide update correctly on occasions or would mess with the other phones on the line. Now the filter is just filtering out soem extra information that is coming accross the phones cabling.

Now remember that DSL works on your phone line because it has other frequencies being used that just the frequencies that the Telephone uses. So this CAN mess up the signals to your DirecTV Receiver/DVR. Now it may NOT but do you want to take the chance of burning up your Receiver/DVR’s modem? When I purchased my DSL they sent me about 5 or six DSL filters so I always had some sitting around. Also I have seen them at Electronic stores like Fry’s Electronics for pretty cheap. IT WILL NOT HURT YOUR RECEIVER/DVR TO HAVE A FILTER ON, BUT IT MAY HURT IT TO NOT HAVE IT ON. So play on the side of caution..

I hope this helps you decide, if you have any further questions please feel free to send me an email..
